In the Devil's Eyes

In the Devil’s Eyes (2016) was written for fellow hornist and composer Frank Starobin. Frank enjoys working with extended techniques for the horn, so with this in mind, I used several of these techniques, including growling, pitch bending, multiphonics, echo horn, half-valve, and the “fake high C” technique. The narrative of the piece follows a person’s descent into hell. The work captures the person’s thoughts as they remember their life and take in the surroundings of the many layers of hell, eventually leading to their imminent demise.
